Intersectionality Assignment Essay

The meaning of intersectionality expresses that it is the social hypothesis recommending different socially and socially built classes of segregation communicate on various and frequently synchronous levels, adding to methodical social disparity. Intersectionality holds that the traditional models of abuse inside society, for example, those dependent on race/ethnicity, sex, religion, nationality, sexual direction, class, or inability don't act autonomously of each other; rather, these types of persecution interrelate making an arrangement of mistreatment that mirrors the â€Å"intersection† of numerous types of segregation. (http://geekfeminism.wikia.com/wiki/Intersectionality) I think the creator planned to remember intersectionality for the story to show that individuals tend to order others quickly without becoming more acquainted with them. As people we judge others an excessive amount of to our benefit and we don’t even acknowledge we are doing it lion's share of t he time. I think Morrison’s fundamental reason in Recitatif is to make the peruser significantly progressively mindful of their cliché decisions about various races dependent on the utilization of various signs that Twyla and Roberta show as characters all through the story. By composing with this strategy of utilizing concealed signs in the content it makes the peruser start to attempt to normally make sense of the races of Twyla and Roberta. She likewise remembers things for this story, for example, their perspectives on knowledge, physical appearance, racial pressures, riches and social class. I think Morrison would like to make her perusers mindful that we are for the most part liable of utilizing generalizations that this general public has made for us. It’s exactly what we have known for our entire lives. Perhaps a took in conduct from our folks, grandparents, or anybody we are around a ton. Everybody, regardless of whether they are bigot or the most non-supremacist individual on earth, makes decisions on a â€Å"different† individual that doesn’t fit into their â€Å"norm†. In the event that I needed to speculate I would state Twyla is dark and Roberta is white. One section in the story Roberta says that â€Å"they never washed their hair and they smelled funny†, alluding to Twyla. Roberta likewise said this regarding Twyla’s mother â€Å"She was huge. Greater than any man and on her chest was the greatest cross I’d ever observed. I swear it was six inches in length every way. What's more, in the hooligan of her arm was the greatest book of scriptures ever made.† This depiction seems like a major African American mother in light of the fact that that’s what you could picture her as. Being Christian, not keen on being companions with Roberta’s mother, and raging endlessly from her gets my psyche envisioning that she is the demeanor dark huge momma kind of lady. Something else I chose to take a gander at to assist me with choosing was their names. Supposedly on it gets more enthusiastically to keep the equivalent a similar perspective on who’s separated of what race as a result of the various generalizations and articulations that are made by the characters when they keep on running into each other further down the road. Additionally in light of the fact that as an individual you begin to understand that you are judging and doing whatever it takes not to. For me that started a totally different perspective and persistently changed my assessment about the perusing a few times At times Roberta might be the dark young lady and Twyla could be white. Taking everything into account, its fundamentally surrendered over to you to choose who’s what race and its truly going to make you fully aware of how critical you can be and how enormous of a job these regular generalizations truly have at the forefront of your thoughts, in any event, when it appears that you have no prejudice or deciding in you.

The Importance of Truth-Telling Essay Example for Free

The Importance of Truth-Telling Essay Coming clean is something that surfaces for most of us in youth. It is viewed as discourteous to lie and when a falsehood was told, or you were untruthful, it was frequently viewed as an impression of your parents’ moral mentalities. Tragically, we as a whole appear to have been educated distinctively the specific idea of a fact or lie and the set in stone manner to utilize that data. In To Lie or Not to Lie? †The Doctor’s Dilemma (2007), the subject of truth versus lies by specialists explicitly, is talked about. While I trust it is significant for specialists to be honest in their dealings with patients, the 5 W’s should be investigated: what and to whom is truth, how and when are specialists decisions for truth-explaining to decided and why it is significant for them to come clean to their patients. Truth: â€Å"conformity to certainty or reality† as per the Canadian Oxford Dictionary, doesn't show up in the public eye to be that solid. From youth we were instructed about the significance of truth with the results of our activities allotted on the off chance that we were not honest. Regularly our comprehension of this subject was not equivalent to †Johnny’s† nearby and we were left with this confounding amalgamation, compelled to gage for ourselves on a situational premise what amount was falsehood or truth in some random explanation. Society’s assessment on this theme accordingly is fluctuated dependent on our own individual morals created throughout the years. Specialists, held to far better expectations than all of us, are compelled to play ‘God’ with their patients, despite the fact that the Uncertainty guideline â€Å"suggests that there is no sureness in medicinal services, along these lines no ‘absolute truth’ to uncover. ‘Truth-telling can never be accomplished. † (Tuckett, 2004, p. 500). In his conclusions a specialist â€Å"must be mindful so as to recognize the thought of ‘truth’ as ‘the way things truly are’ (alleged target truth) from that of ‘truth’ as ‘the way an individual accepts things to be’. † (Tuckett, 2004, p. 508). TRUTH-TELLING 3 The Importance of Truth-Telling The American College of Physicians Ethics Manual impacts dynamic by specialists by means of standards. Despite the fact that these standards â€Å"do not give requested guidelines, these standards can help specialists and other medicinal services laborers to settle on choices while thinking about good issues that emerge at work. † (Gillon, 1994, p. 184). Regard for Autonomy, one of these core values utilized in a large portion of the choices with long haul inabilities or terminal diseases, recognizes a â€Å"persons option to hold sees, to make choices† and to take actions†¦Ã¢â‚¬ (Shahidi, 2010, p. 590). Clinical Ethics are set up to make a harmony between all renditions of ‘truth’ and give structure to the connection among specialist and patient, also to give direction to the specialist and secure the privileges of the patient. Since truth isn't highly contrasting like we now and then wish to figure the specialist can utilize this system to encourage a fair and confiding in relationship with his patients. The results can be enduring if the fact of the matter isn't advised to patients in an opportune manner or completely. Ailment can escape from you rapidly with no possibility to go back in time or just the opportunity to offer some kind of reparation to encourage a quiet exit. Specialists deluding patients, regardless of whether by exclusion or by utilizing semi-facts, dissolves trust in that relationship (Tuckett, 2004). By not being straightforward with a patient determination they may make the patient undue hardship as concurring Mitchell, †Patients with bogus data or no data about their condition may accidentally deceive different doctors associated with their treatment† (Shahidi, 2010, p. 592). Lying likewise strips â€Å"the patient’s capacity to be self-ruling and neglects to show regard for people. † While â€Å"truth-telling keeps up the skillful patient’s status as an adult†. (Tuckett, 2004, p. 505). TRUTH-TELLING 4 The Importance of Truth-Telling. Keeping up the patients government assistance ought to be the essential objective of a specialist while he is deciding precisely exactly how to address reality telling. One of the standards under clinical morals is ’above all do no harm’. The durable results of picking which ‘truth’ to tell could raise doubt about this standard. We have verified that fact isn't as straightforward as we might want it to be, yet there still should be an attention on genuineness, honesty, and total honesty with specialists and their patients. Our wellbeing is a joint exertion, and we should have the option to depend on and trust our clinical experts to tell us what truly is occurring. I accept that minimal measure of damage over the long haul would be in telling the total truth, anyway I comprehend that we are on the whole extraordinary and our circumstances are unique and it at that point makes sense that the arrangements will all be diverse too. By remembering the who, what, where, when, why and even how, I figure the obtaining of this data would offer the best response to every fact telling circumstance.

Wait Listed for Grad School, Now What

After waiting for a seemingly interminable time, you get word about your graduate school application: Youre wait-listed. Huh? What does that mean? What Is Being Wait-Listed? In short, it is exactly as it sounds. Just as you might wait behind velvet ropes before entering a popular restaurant or theater, wait-listed applicants stand behind a metaphorical velvet rope hoping to be admitted. While you have not been rejected, you also have not been accepted. Essentially, as a wait-list member, you are in the departments second choice of applicants. In programs that receive dozens and even hundreds of applications for several slots, thats actually not so bad.   What Being Wait-Listed Doesnt Mean Now, lets look at what being wait-listed is not. It does not mean that you are  rejected. But it does not mean that you are accepted either. Youre in limbo, just as you were after submitting your application. Recently someone told us that he had not received a formal response from the admissions committee but was told that the committee is waiting to review applicants in light of delays caused by a faculty member. Does that mean that I am wait-listed? he asked. No. In this case, the applicant is waiting for the admissions committees decision. Being wait-listed is the result of the admissions committees decision. Why Does Wait-Listing Happen? Graduate admissions committees realize that not all candidates who are accepted will utilize their offer of admission. Sometimes, admissions committees dont even notify the alternate candidates theyve selected. Instead, they wait and notify them of acceptance if a slot opens rather than telling candidates that theyve been wait-listed (and perhaps getting candidates hopes up prematurely). More frequently, however, applicants who are alternates are sent letters indicating their alternate or wait-list status. If youre wait-listed, then youre waiting to see if a slot opens if another candidate who has been offered admission declines. What Do You Do if Youre Wait-Listed? What do you do if youre an alternate? Sounds clichà ©Ã‚  and terrible, but: Wait. Take the time to consider whether the program is still of interest to you. If youve been accepted elsewhere and plan to attend, notify the admissions committee to be withdrawn from the waitlist. If you receive an offer from another program but youre more interested in the program to which youre an alternate, its permissible to follow up and inquire if any more information is available. Understand that the program staff may not have more information, but, like you, they want to end the process as quickly as possible. If youre down to the wire and have an offer of admission, sometimes youll have to make a decision to withdraw your alternate status or run the risk of declining a solid offer of admission for something that may never materialize (forcing you to start the graduate admissions process all over again). Sometimes a wait-list status ends with rejection. In this case, dont beat yourself up. Your application caught the admissions committees eye. You have the qualities they seek but there were too many other qualified applicants. If you think graduate school is for you and plan to apply again, learn from this experience and improve your credentials for the next time.

Tragic Hero Macbeth Oedipus free essay sample

According to Aristotle, he defines tragic hero as someone who has a nobility status or a powerful man with some greatness and outstanding qualities within himself. As can be seen in almost plays, tragic heroes are always being portrayed as someone that occupy a high status but must also illustrates nobility and virtue as part of his or her innate characters, (Poetics from Aristotle). However, these heroes are not all perfects. There will be some tragic incidents that eventually lead them to the downfall. This is due to the heroes’ own faults and in fact, in some cases the tragic incidents are usually triggered by some error judgments or some characters’ flaws that could contributes to the hero’s downfall. â€Å"Hamartia† or the error of judgments is also known as â€Å"tragic flaw† is one of the sixth qualities from tragic heroes according to Aristotle. Other than that, an overwhelming self-confidence or in Greek tragedies, it is known as â€Å"hubris† also one of the factors that leads to the downfall of the hero. Even though eventually there will be a tragic ending to the characters however, according to Aristotle the tragedy does not leave its audiences in a state of depression. He argues that solemn emotions such as sad, fear and pity that aroused are one of the functions of the tragedy through catharsis. According to Aristotle also true tragic hero must have six key qualities and these are hamartia, hubris, anagnorisis, peripeteia, nemesis, and catharsis. Anagnorisis is a recognition or discovery made by the tragic hero. In other words, the tragic hero will learn a lesson, usually as a result of his downfall. For example, Oedipus kills his father in ignorance and then learns of his true relationship to the King of Thebes,(Ley Graham,1991). Peripeteia is a reversal of fortune, the downfall of the tragic hero and it occurs when a situation seems to developing in one direction, but then suddenly reverses to another. For example, when Oedipus first hears of the death of Polybus (his supposed father), the news at first seems good, but then is revealed to be a disastrous, (Ley Graham, 1991). According to Ben Johnson in his Modern Day Tragic hero articles, (2007), Nemesis is a fate that cannot be escaped. Meanwhile, catharsis is a feeling of overwhelming pity and or fear that the audience or reader is left with after witnessing the downfall of a tragic hero, Aristotle has quoted, A man cannot become a hero until he can see the root of his own downfall. Thus, from my understanding of what Aristotle means by this quote is that people must discover the main points that lead them to the failure and after that, they can be their own protagonists or heroes for their own life. They can stand high back when they overcome their failures. In Oedipus Rex play, Oedipus, the main character is the tragic hero in this play. As according to the character of Oedipus, Aristotle says that a tragic hero must be an important or influential man who makes an error in judgment, and who must then suffer the consequences of his actions. In this play, Oedipus originally is a hero because of his good deeds, sacrifices and contributions that he had made for his people. He had his highest moment of glory in this play but it did not last long as eventually he had been destroyed and experienced a terrible downfall due to his own actions which he had committed earlier. For example, those actions were seen when Oedipus  forces Teiresias to reveal his destiny and his fathers name. When Teiresias tried warned Oedipus by saying â€Å"I say that you and your most dearly loved are wrapped together in a hideous sin, blind to the horror of it† (Sophocles 428). Oedipus still does not care and proceeds with his questioning as if he did not understand what Teiresias was talking about. In this play, Oedipus had successfully solved a riddles from the Sphinx with an exchange of the freedom for the people of Thebes from her curse. As a reward for freeing the people of Thebes, Oedipus married the newly widowed Queen Jocasta without realizing that she was his own biological mother. Thus, unintentionally he had fulfilled one of the prophecies. What made it worst was that Oedipus even had a child with Queen Jocasta, his own mother. By the time he had realized that he was actually fulfilling the prophecies from the oracle but at the same time he was also being glorified as a hero by his people. He had killed King Laius before, without knowing the facts that the king and his then wife, Queen Jocasta had a child who had been ordered death by the king and the child was being prophesized to kill his own father and he will be together with his mother. Eventually, he learnt the truth that the abandoned child was himself and he was actually succeeded in fulfilling those prophecies. This was a turn of event because when he was initially thought that he was actually a hero to his country and people with all the deeds and contributions that he had made but it turned out that all those were actually a journey or a path to his own disaster and miserable in life. At first King Laius, Queen Jocasta and Oedipus were trying to avoid the prophecies as far as possible and made it impossible however, the more they tried to run from it they were actually ran toward the prophecies. All that happened were unconsciously done without knowing the real truths like how Oedipus had killed his own father and married with his own mother. Therefore, Oedipus is a tragic hero because he had been manipulative and deceived by the good deeds that he had done. Lastly, he gouged his eyes out so that he could not see the truth anymore with such a big embarrassment that he faced and he was a blind man with so  much hatred towards himself of what he did. Hence, from my opinion Oedipus can be categorized as a tragic hero as he fulfills the requirements of a tragic hero according to the ideas of Aristotle. He is a noble and powerful man but experiences a terrible downfall due to his own faults. He had such a disaster and miserable ending. In Macbeth play, from my opinion, Macbeth himself is considered as a tragic hero. Macbeth also fulfills the definition of tragic hero by Aristotle as he says that a tragic hero must be an important or influential man who makes an error in judgment, and who must then suffer the consequences of his actions. Macbeth is a man of nobility and high status but he come across a bad consequence at the end of the play due to his own mistakes and then suffer from it. It was all started with the prophecies from the three witches that told Macbeth he was to be Thane of Cawdor, Thane of Glamis and King of Scotland. After hearing about these prophecies, Macbeth was very curious and desirable to know on how and what ways that he could be The King of Scotland. Then, Macbeth began to believe and relied on the prophecies of the witches. It was like the prophecies were kept haunting Macbeth and it enlightened the dark curiosity of Macbeth which slowly overshadowed his character. If the witches did not convey the prophecies towards Macbeth at first place, it would not be any initiative persuasion that could lead Macbeth into taking the dark path. Besides, Lady Macbeth, the wife of Macbeth was also a big factor that made Macbeth turned out to be evil. Audiences were all being deceived and manipulated by the first impression that Lady Macbeth gave for them as a very lovely and demure woman. It was her actually who persuaded Macbeth to continue with the planned on killing King Duncan. Macbeth was actually kind of regretted when he first killed King Duncan but his wife had provided a strategy about murdering the king. Macbeth was a little bit of hesitated after the first murdering but the only way to maintain his power of his people was by murdering the king and it was the only path that he could seen. From this, it can be seen that Macbeth’s downfall and tragic also  contributed by other characters. Apart from that, Macbeth’s new ambition has completely changed himself to a totally different person. This ambition has totally turned him into a greedy, violence and heartless person. He had a heart to kill King Duncan just because of the greed to the throne. The Lady Macbeth also influenced Macbeth’s ambition because if it was not for his wife that motivated Macbeth for killing then it would be less desirable for Macbeth to take over the throne because he will failed the attempted to murder at the first place. Thus, all these factors toward Macbeth were greatly influenced the real-self of Macbeth. At the end, Macbeth has been lead to the terrible tragedy and downfall. In conclusion, both tragic heroes above are all from the nobility status and they begin with someone that can be considered as the hero and the savior of their people but because of their own faults, they create the downfalls by themselves without they realize it. Both heroes’ downfalls are from the same problems that are because of they believed some ridiculous prophecy that they rely on. Their downfalls have affected the people who live under their reigns. Because of their own fault, they also give punishments to themselves, for example, Oedipus blinds himself as a punishment of his wrong doings.

Those Winter Sundays free essay sample

Those Winter Sundays By Robert Hayden’s Robert Haydens Poem, Those Winter Sundays, is the perfect example of a life lesson. As a child growing up there are things we do not realize but eventually life reveals the significance of curtain things and in this poem Hayden’s has this experience. This poem shows how we take things and people closest to us for granted. He does this in three ways, blatantly, with the language he uses, and also with the mood and tone he sets. The speaker in the poem gives imagery of his father being a hard working man. In line 1 the speaker states, â€Å"Sundays too my father got up early. † Meaning that usully the Sundays when most people rest his father got up early to work. It is obvious that the father was a very hard worker by the lines, â€Å"with cracked hands that ached from labor in weekday weather†. We will write a custom essay sample on Those Winter Sundays or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page In lines 3 through 5, it focuses on his father effort and endured suffering. He is tired from all the work and it is paid for in pain. Yet there isn’t enough pain in the world to prevent him from providing for his family by preparing a fire. But his family never thanked him for what he has done nor have they acknowledged him. The speaker believed that his father didn’t love him because his father never showed any affection towards his, but little did he know that his father showed his love through the work his did. In the first stanza it seems that Hayden used great language to emphasize his meanings. Notice the sounds that he uses as he tells the beginning of this story. In line 6, consonance continues as the Sunday morning experience is introduced. In line 7 and 8, the father calls to the son, who then performs the same act as the father in lines and two by rising and dressing. By them doing the same thing, the speaker has come to understand this childhood experience by eventually finding himself in the role of the father. In line 9, it ends with a powerful line. It seems the idea of â€Å"chronic angers† is introduced into clam scene in which the father makes the house warm and comfortable for his family. In line 13, the speaker says, â€Å"What did I know, what did I know. Now he is realizing that his father really did love him and just showed his loved indirectly. But since he’s an adult now he understands that his father love was just indirect, he father truly did love his and showed it by for the family.

7 Ways You’re Messing Up Your 401k

7 Ways You’re Messing Up Your 401k A 401k can be a magical thing. It’s a tax shelter available to most every American that can offer great returns- particularly if you have a matching program to take advantage of. But you may not know all there is to know about this personal financial tool. Read up on a few ways in which you might be messing with the goose that wants to lay your golden eggs, and make sure you’re not doing any of these things:1. Not Being MatchedIt seems obvious: don’t turn down free money. And you get free money if you contribute enough to trigger your company’s matching plan. Usually, this is about 3-5% of your gross. Figure out what corners you need to cut to make this possible, and then smile your way to the bank.2. Not Maxing OutContributing 5% is great, but if you can configure things to  do better, you definitely should. Depending on your tax bracket and age, you can defer between $18k and $24k of your salary. Put in as much as you possibly can- and more if you and your spouse are both working.3. Borrowing From YourselfIt’s so tempting, but unless you’re in an absolute emergency situation, act as though your 401k is totally off-limits until retirement. You’ll be penalized and taxed for withdrawals and loans come with a high tax rate. And remember: if a big emergency expense does come up, you could consider using your credit instead. Worst case scenario, most 401ks remain safe in bankruptcy proceedings.4. Transferring/Cashing OutIf you’re switching jobs, don’t cash out your 401k or you’ll have to pay a 10% tax penalty. But don’t just roll it over into your new employer’s plan either. Consider opening a traditional IRA; there won’t be a penalty if you follow the appropriate procedures, and then you have much more investment freedom.5. Not Upping Your ContributionEvery time your pay rises, automatically increase the size of your 401k contribution. Try living on your old salary and put ting the whole difference away for retirement. This helps you avoid lifestyle creep and means you can retire earlier and better.6. Not Managing Your PortfolioKeep and eye on your allocations. Are you investing too much or too little in stocks? Are you risking too much or too little? How close are you to the golden retirement age? Are you being the right amount of careful for where you are in your career? Don’t just fall asleep at the wheel and let good money get drained away by unanticipated market crashes.7. Not DiversifyingDon’t just put all of your 401k in one fund, particularly if your 401k is your primary investment source. Try to cover four categories: index, growth, international, and bonds. This will spread out your risk and keep your portfolio diverse. And make sure to choose funds with low fees (i.e. expense ratios of less than 1%).

The dangers that police officers face in rural areas due to the lack Research Paper

The dangers that police officers face in rural areas due to the lack of back up or riding partners - Research Paper Example The personal safety and security of a rural police officer is a cause of stress to the police fraternity, as they are faced with isolation that poses great danger. The back- up required by an urban police officer is met with, almost instantly. Whenever the need arises, the urban police officer is assured of back-up within minutes. The same is not in the case of their rural counterparts because at most times there is the danger that relief comes when it is too late. In most cases it sometimes takes more than an hour to get help from back-up forces. This leads to stress on the part of the rural police officer even when they have to handle seemingly easy cases of domestic violence or auto crashes. A good example of this was an incident that took place on March 31st 1989, where help did not arrive in time and Maine State Police Detective Giles Landry was shot and killed after he responded to a call regarding a domestic dispute in a secluded spot in a rural area. When inspector Landry arrived at the scene of the crime, the suspects girlfriend made a beeline to the passenger seat of the detective’s patrol car, giving the suspect reason to believe that Detective Landry was indeed her lover because he was in an unmarked police car and moreover alone. The suspect had slowly approached the vehicle from the rear- end and shot at Landry twice through the window at the back, with a Ruger .44 caliber rifle, hitting Detective Giles Landry in the head, putting an end to him instantly. Immediately after this, the suspect shot at his girlfriend killing her on the spot and soon after that committed suicide himself. The detective officer had left behind a wife and their two children. There are countless such cases taking place especially in the rural areas, where unsuspecting police personnel are at the mercy of dangerous criminals. Such a dangerous situation could have been averted had the officer

Ethics Audit Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1750 words

Ethics Audit - Essay Example Hence, they are under intense pressures to ensure their own wellbeing, if not survival. Ends and activities not directly tied to their own survival or well-being, and not protected by other supportive conditions, naturally come under pressures for reduction or elimination. "Ethics is a moving target. Social values shift over time, influenced by a complex web of factors. Employers must keep a close eye on those values and, when possible, proactively address ethical dilemmas emerging in their companies" (Vickers 2005, p. 26). Fo P&G, business ethics is much more than an expression of taste, however strongly felt. Properly understood, business ethics is in fact about moral principles; indeed, it is the application of ethics to, or in, specifically business situations and activities. For P&G, ethics refers to moral codes and the actions enjoined by them as well as to the study of either or both. Indeed, when dealing with received opinion, such common usages will be observed, both with respect to "ethics" and to "business ethics." When strictly used, however, the term "ethics" refers properly to a subsection of philosophy, that which seeks to identify and clarify the presuppositions of human conduct having to do with good and evil (International Business E thics Institutive 2008). In a work on business ethics, the grounds of ethical activity, like the existence of business, must be taken as given. Certain implications of the philosophical nature of ethics are, however, crucial to the question of universality. "At Procter & Gamble, we have maintained strong Corporate Governance polices and practices for many years. These core values set a tone of integrity for the entire company-one that is reinforced consistently at all levels and in all countries" (P & G Home Page 2008). The most important, is that as a purely theoretical discipline, ethics has no necessary connection to any existing system of religious belief, or any specific legal framework, or any particular moral code. As a result, the commonly cited variations of actual practice are simply irrelevant to the question of whether there are universal truths of business ethics--cultural diversity, even cultural relativism, does not and cannot justify ethical relativism (Swanson, 2005 ). Nevertheless, although ethics is essentially theoretical, there is a metaphorical sense in which the techniques and principles of ethics proper can still be helpful in dealing with real life problems--the clarity of thought and awareness of key concepts developed in philosophical study may well inform action. It is in this extended sense that one may properly speak of "applied ethics," or the "application" of ethics to business, or of ethics "enjoining" specific courses of action. Business ethics is simply the application of general moral principles to specifically business situations and activities Husted et al 1996). The Function of Business Ethics P&G customizes its ethical culture to match unique needs and values of the company to global business demands. The function of business ethics is to resolve or at least to clarify the moral issues which typically arise in commerce. Starting from an analysis of the nature and

Internal Functions and External Relationships - NWTB Essay Example for Free

Internal Functions and External Relationships NWTB Essay The ICT department is concerned with supporting the other functions of the organisation and the clients externally of the organisation. Its job is to ensure that ICT is being used as a support to help the other functions to operate as effectively as possible. Mr Povey has been involved in the implementation of standard kit throughout the NWTB as well as the organisations with whom they have a relationship externally. He has also been responsible for helping the clients (e.g. hotels, tourist attractions) to use ICT to effectively promote themselves and in turn the Northwest as a tourist destination. The NWTB is aiming for competitive advantage, e.g. they want tourists to visit the Northwest more than any other region in the UK. ICT can act as a tool to aid in the process of competitive advantage. The ICT departments role is to ensure that whilst ICT investment comes at a huge initial cost to the organisation, it is worthwhile, will provide value for money and is necessary in the long run to ensure stability and survival for the business in the future. Whether or not the ICT systems provide value for money will depend on how effective the systems are that are implemented and how well the user uses them. The ICT department are responsible for evaluating the systems in place and updating them as necessary to ensure they continue to support as opposed to hinder the operation of the organisations. The ICT department is split into 2 areas. The area responsible for maintenance of the current system and providing a service to the users within the organisation of the NWTB. This involves daily troubleshooting tasks like fixing broken machines and printers as well as maintenance of the network. It also involves the identification of training needs of those who use ICT within the NWTB as well as provision of training for those users. Secondly, the responsibility that Mr Povey has of promoting the effective use of ICT to destinations across the Northwest ensuring they can compete and provide tourists with excellent service e.g. by booking rooms or tickets on the internet or over the phone. This aspect of ICT falls mainly under the Operations function of the NWTB because it is this aspect of ICT that covers the providing of a service. The NWTB provides a service to its members e.g. the local hotels and tourist destinations, helping them to employ effective ICT systems, they in turn can provide a better, more competitive service to tourists. Mr Poveys role does not involve in any way the maintenance of the systems used by members, he simply acts as an advisor to members and can inform them of any funding they may apply for to help with purchasing ICT equipment. He does also help to identify training needs of members and organise training events. Some of the benefits of using ICT within the NWTB * Improved accuracy from basic typing of letters to automation of financial spreadsheets * Faster processing leading to faster responses e.g. e-mail communication between departments, purchase orders being completed using computers etc. * Information available for management that previously wouldnt have been available in time or may not have been in enough detail or as concise * Tighter control as a result of easily accessible financial information * Reduced costs as staff can be more productive with the support of ICT e.g. use of mail merge reduces the time and effort required for typing and sending a standard letter to a number of clients. * New sources of information to allow for improved marketing * Faster, more effective communication with regional and sub regional partners * Some of the benefits of using ICT to the NWTB members * Promotion can advertise to a wider audience not previously reached because of distance from the location, via Internet. * Sales improved marketing information results in increased sales. Ability to sell tickets and accept on-line booking improves sales as the business becomes available to a wider audience * Management information increased advanced ticket sales and bookings enables management to plan better and so be better prepared for requirements in terms of stock levels, number of staff needed, car parking issues etc. * Access to competitor information using the Internet management can research into what competitors are doing e.g. special offers and can compete with their own promotion ideas. * Production of promotional materials management can use their own systems to produce their own leaflets and flyers so saving money on printing costs * Financial Information management can store details in an automated spreadsheet making financial monitoring and planning quick and easy. * Data Storage management can store information about clients on a database which requires littler physical space and can be searched more quickly as opposed to sifting through a large paper based directory or file to find customer details. * Faster, more effective customer services customers can be dealt with quickly and efficiently if business data is stored on an easy to use system e.g. hotel booking systems. On some hotels customers can run up a bill using the bar, restaurant, leisure facilities etc if the business has a centralised computer based facility. Customers can see their billing information for a stay in the hotel on one printed sheet as opposed to keeping hold of a number of receipts. The customer is not required to pay for services individually as they pay for everything at the end. This can enhance the customers experience of staying in a hotel. Happy customers will usually spread the word and recommend a hotel to friends and relations as well as planning a return visit themselves. This all helps the businesses in their pursuit of competitive advantage. * More effective communication the businesses will be able to communicate with clients, suppliers, service providers etc via e-mail. How does ICT help NWTB to operate effectively? Suppose that there was a huge tourist event being organised in Southport. Then there are a number of jobs to be done within the NWTB to ensure the promotion and success of this event. The marketing department will carry out some research to establish the make-up of the target audience for the event and will then decide on the best methods of promotion for the event. For example, texting a large group of people, producing and displaying posters throughout the region, distributing flyers, sending leaflets directly to peoples houses, radio and TV advertising etc. ICT may be used to design a questionnaire to establish the target audience and those interested in attending the event. ICT may be used to input and analyse information about the potential audience The marketing department will have a large database with the details of people who have been to events in the past and will also have access to information about the make-up of households in the area. ICT may be used to access databases with peoples contact details and mail merge this with a standard letter to be sent to the households of the target audience. Marketing will need to speak to finance about the available budget for promotion and advertising. A spreadsheet may be used to calculate the amount of money available from the NWTB budget. A further spreadsheet may be created by the marketing department to allow them to keep track of all financial transactions that take place in relation to this particular event. This may also help them to make important decisions about how much to spend on aspects of the promotion. Information will be sent to local hotels and guesthouses about the event to inform them that there may be business to be gained from the event in that people who attend from outside the region will need somewhere to stay. This may be done using e-mail and attachments. Marketing will need to send copies of invoices and bills for the production of leaflets, posters etc. to the finance department so that the finance department can pay the bills. Administration will be responsible for word processing and sending the standard letter to households promoting the event. After the event the marketing department will need to evaluate the success of the event and its impact on the region. Was the event worthwhile to the region? They will need to collect and analyse information from a variety of sources to assess its impact. ICT will be useful at all stages in this complex evaluation process. What are the external relationships that NWTB has? Department for Culture, Media and Sport National Level DCMS champions good quality and service for tourists, from the UK and overseas. We encourage and help the tourism industry to improve what it has to offer for all our visitors and to promote a positive image abroad. Tourism Policy DCMS Ministers are very keen to modernise and reform the tourism industry, working more closely than before with the industry, and current tourism policy is focusing on improving structures, marketing, data, quality and skills, as follows: * The industry has formed a new body, the Tourism Alliance, to represent its views better to Government and catalyse actions to help delivery of policy objectives * VisitBritain was set up on 1 April 2003, bringing together the English Tourism Council (ETC) and the British Tourist Authority (BTA) * The relaunched body has a new and significant marketing role for England, including the development of e-tourism * Funding which previously went to Regional Tourist Boards via the ETC will now be channelled via the Regional Development Agencies * Major reviews on quality and data have been initiated, consulting the industry and others as appropriate * Industry and Government are working in close partnership on the skills agenda, and the Government is strongly supporting the establishment of a Sector Skills Council for Tourism Current policy as described above builds upon Tomorrows Tourism, the Governments 1999 strategy for the development of tourism in England. Good progress has already been made in delivering Tomorrows Tourism, which has also brought together a number of Government departments who are working closely with DCMS and the tourism industry to implement the strategy. Important areas not mentioned explicitly above, such as sustainable development of tourism and increasing access to tourism, are now considered as a matter of course in policy development and delivery. Support Structures In April 2003 the strengths and resources of the British Tourist Authority and the English Tourism Council were combined in one organisation, renamed VisitBritain. VisitBritain is responsible for promoting Britain overseas and England to the domestic market. Its key roles are to boost Britains income from tourism through professional and effective marketing, and to provide a framework within which the tourism industry can work in closer partnership. With its network of overseas offices, VisitBritain helps the over 120,000 tourism businesses in Britain reach overseas customers cost-effectively. For England, VisitBritain provides a central coordination role to make the most of the collective effort of all sectors promoting tourism in England to a domestic audience. A greater role in tourism for Regional Development Agencies (RDAs) in England is a major strand of the Governments programme of tourism reform. Since 1 April 2003, the RDAs are playing a stronger part in the strategic leadership of tourism, working both individually and together with each other within the new national framework for tourism strategy and marketing. The Regional Tourist Boards are the RDAs natural partners and will be funded by the RDAs, for the next three years at least, at a level equivalent to the project funding they received in 2002-03 from the former English Tourism Council. This amounts to à ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½3.6 million per year. This arrangement excludes London, for which there are separate arrangements with the Greater London Authority. Regional Partners Other regions of the UK who all work together to help implememtn the strategy for the whole of the UK Sub Regional Partners regions that make up the Northwest. They share good practise and work together to promote the region as a whole. Lancashire Tourist Board Cheshire County Council North West Development Agency The Mersey Partnership Marketing Manchester Cumbria Tourist Board The NWTB also has a relationship with a number of smaller businesses within the sub regioanl partners e.g. small hotels, tourist attractions etc. The NWTB also has a relationship with all the organisations listed below as a business cannot function independently of these. The Inland Revenue, Customs and Excise, Insurers, ISPs, Data service providers, Computer and communications equipment suppliers, Courier Services, Utilities, Local authority departments, Advertising Agencies, Printer Firms. How is information used in the NWTB? Operations: * Purchasing * Work Scheduling- The NWTB will use this daily as they need to gain up to date information from all organisations. They will need to know where employees are in case another job comes up that is more important. * Delivery- The NWTB would need to make sure its customers where kept up to date with the latest technology, however, it is then up to the organisation as to whether they would like to utilise the technology. With small businesses the NWTB often spearheads the idea for the introduction of ICT into the business for more effective and efficient productivity. This means they may often have to supply their clients with computers in order to give them the best deal on, often, a small budget. Marketing: * Market Trends- Systems for studying market trends need to record and present data as defined by the current user, whether it be number of tourists visiting one attraction, or what attractions are open at that present time. Price and performance trends are also covered. * Analysis of competitive activity- The NWTB will be trying to make the northwest the best tourist destination in order to improve its reputation. They are constantly in competition with the other regions in the country. Within the NWTB you can sub-section the industry into different attractions, e.g. Hotels in one category and entertainment complexes in another. These sub- categories are in each have their own levels of competition in the northwest. * Planning and analysis of promotional campaigns- This is vital to the efficient running of the NWTB, they target not only small businesses in the promotions, but also the larger more established organisations that have more power to bring more tourists. Sales: * Receiving and logging of customer orders * Invoice production * Customer details * Recording all sales visits and other sales activity The ICT department have an important role in designing, introducing, and developing e-commerce systems. E-commerce is one of many ways a client of the NWTB can become a much more successful firm without the need of expansion. It allows small firms to broaden horizons, they do however take a number of months to become profitable and implementing them often takes a lot of time and effort, however, in the market today it is very easy to provide e-commerce safely and securely. The sales department would also keep a list of customers and clients on record. They will use these to keep details like address, e-mail address, buying history, current sale status, and sales person dealt with in the transaction. Research and Design: * Product design- The design process would be carried out using CAD, this allows the design department to produce lots of designs very quickly, it also allows the drawings to be much more accurate. This process also allows designs to be inter-compatible. * Engineering design- Due to CAD the design process becomes much quicker, in the production of advertisements it becomes much easier to edit motion clips on a computer very quickly. On a static poster you can retouch the elements present within it. * Analysis of new developments Finance: * Sales, purchase and nominal ledgers * Credit control * Payroll * Payments in and out, including EFT * Budgets, projections and accounts * Historical financial records Finance has to be able to give instant statements on the financial situation in the company to the directors, on request. EFT stands for electronic funds transfer. It refers to any use of computers in making payments to organisations or individuals. It is a rapid way of transferring money, but raises doubts about security. These administrative applications are largely similar between one organisation and another. There is nonetheless an important task for ICT to advise on the particular software products to be obtained. Administration: * Personnel records and pension scheme- personnel records include, for each employee: name, home address and telephone number, NI number, employee number and department, DOB, sex, date of joining company, job history before joining company, job history since joining, training, qualifications and skills. * Legal and statutory matters * Insurance * External authorities and contractors * Board meetings and annual general meetings As with the finance department, many of the systems used are universal throughout many different companies. The advice of ICT is likely to be both helpful to users and able to support the organisations policies on standardisation. The ICT Department: One of the key roles of the ICT department is to explain the advantages that may be available for managers and their departments of making greater use of computer-based systems. The team needs to explain the structure and characteristics of ICT projects. Another important task of ICT is to devise and manage centralised systems in the following areas: * Procurement of computer equipment * Procurement of computing and communications equipment * Use of e-mail and other Internet access procedures * System development, testing and standardisation

Teaching Race Explicitly in the Classroom Essay -- Education

Teaching Race Explicitly in the Classroom Many literacy experts point out the fact that at the college level, black students who attend all-black schools tend to be more successful than those attending predominantly white schools. Even though these schools often lack resources and financial stability, they nonetheless produce more high achieving black students than predominantly white schools. For instance, according to Fleming, black students attending Historically Black Universities and Colleges (HBUC) have higher graduation rates than those attending predominately white institutions. Also, students who graduate from a HBUC and go on to attend predominantly white graduate schools do just as well as students who have graduated from predominantly white colleges (Fleming 1). What is it that black schools and black teachers have that produces academically successful black students? What approaches to learning can white teachers adopt from black teachers in order to maximize the learning of these students? Bell Hooks, author of Teaching to Transgress: Education as the Practice of Freedom, grew up in the South. As a young child, she attended a segregated school, but then made the transition into a desegregated school later in her youth. Hooks believes that the education she received at the all-black school was far better than the education at the desegregated school. Hooks explains: Almost all of our teachers at Booker T. Washington were black women. They were committed to nurturing our intellect so that we could become scholars, thinkers, and cultural workers—black folks who used our "minds"†¦Within these segregated schools, black children who were deemed exceptional, gifted were given special care†¦When we entered rac... ..., Jacqueline Jordan and James W. How the Brain Impacts Learning Essay

The brain is a very complex and amazing organ that consists of two very important halves. The right hemisphere and the left hemisphere, both of these effect how we learn and process information. In most cases we have a dominate side whether it be the left or right side. In some cases it is found that there are whole brained thinkers pulling information from both sides of the brain. Let’s cover how the brain works, what subjects each side learns and how it processes information, teaching techniques for the right, left and whole brained learners. The brain is made up of two halves, or hemispheres – the left brain and the right brain. The brain is divided into two distinct and separate parts by a fold that runs from the front to the back. These parts are connected to each other by a thick cable of nerves at the base of each brain, called the corpus collosum. A good analogy is that of two separate, incredibly fast and immensely powerful computers, each running different program from the same input, connected by a network cable, or the corpus collosum. The left hemisphere of our brain is â€Å"wired† to the right side of our body and vice versa. This even applies to our eyes, with information from our right eye going to the left hemisphere and information from our left eye feeding the right hemisphere†(Eden, Left brain right brain) The left and right side of the brain have different ways to process how they take in information and learn different subjects. Let’s start with the right side of the brain and see how it works in this way. The right hemisphere process the information best with demonstrated instructions, looking for patterns, similarities, open ended questions, drawings and is free with its feelings. â€Å"Right-brain students are the dreamers. They can be very intelligent and very deep thinkers—so much so that they can get lost in their own little worlds. They make great students of the social sciences and the arts. † (Fleming, 2011) The Left side sees things differently than the right side preferring verbal instructions, logical thinking, talking and writing, multiple choice testing and controls feelings. Dominant left brain students will be more organized, they’ll watch the clock, and they’ll analyze information and process it sequentially. They are often cautious, and they follow rules and schedules. Left brain students are strong in math and science, and can answer questions quickly. †(Fleming, 2011) The whole brained learners or middle brained learners, are the ones that can use both sides to processes the different information which is a great benefit to their success in life. They can look at a situation and choose which side would best solve the situation. Students who are middle brain oriented can have strong qualities from either hemisphere. Those students can benefit from logic from the left and intuition from the right. †(Fleming, 2011) We are all different in the way we use our brain; some having a dominate side and some utilizing both sides. Thus leaving the question of how teaching techniques can stimulate both sides? Teachers have a great responsibility teaching our children and they should teach in a way that can stimulate both sides of our brain or better yet the whole brain. It is important to know what types of thinkers you have in your classroom so they can be better taught. The examples above should give you an idea of how the right, left and middle brained thinkers take in the information so let’s move forward to how you can help teach them better. â€Å"For many students, particularly those who are â€Å"right-brained,† a visual, such as a picture or 3-D model, can help them better understand a concept. Another way to help â€Å"right-brained† students is to pair music with learning. Have students make up a song about history facts and sing it to the melody of a familiar song such as â€Å"On Top of Old Smoky. † Let these students see, feel, and touch things. â€Å"Right-brained† students also seem to thrive when doing group or hands-on activities. †(Quantum Learning, 1999, p. 31) Activities should include shared learning, group discussions, role-playing and experiments. These learning techniques will greatly benefit our right brained learners. To help â€Å"left-brained† students, provide information in very logical sequences—for example, make (numbered) lists for them. Another way to help students with a left-brain preference is to give them typed or printed directions. Let these students do their work step by step. â€Å"Left-brained† students seem to thrive when following plans and having structure with activities. † (Quantum Learning, 1999, p. 31) Activates should include analysis, research, realistic projects a nd worksheets. These learning techniques will benefit the left brained thinkers. Keeping in mind though, that many teaching techniques can benefit all of your students; it is also important to use both of these techniques to benefit the students that use both the left and right side of their brain. As an educator you need to understand how your students learn best whether it is a; dominate left or right brained student or the whole brained learner that likes a mixture of both techniques. Another great benefit you can find using these techniques in your lessons is to get a dominate brained student to use there less used side of thinking. Through this we have learned how the brain works, how we process and learn information using both sides of our brain and how teaching techniques are important in learning as a whole. We all learn new things each and every day so use this as it is vital information to help you learn to your full potential. Today, in more than years past, we are using these studies to help students learn as much as they can.
